Literature has taught me to embrace life despite all its twists and all my weaknesses. It has taught me to accept and respect diversity, though it is not always easy. Above all, it has trained me to take a balanced view of life and stand firm upon my principles though I might find myself alone, without falling prey to extremism of any kind. These words of Arundhati Roy, a writer I admire for her sheer guts, resonate very deeply with me today:
“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.” - Arundhati Roy, ‘The Cost of Living’ (1999)
